BLOG

Let's be open.

Open Shelving / Bistro Style has surged in popularity over the past few years and while many have questioned whether it’s timeless (including me) it’s a look that so many of us embrace and ranks high on many a homeowner’s list as an opportunity to showcase pretty dishes or glass containers within easy reach.

Take it to the top!

Tile to the Ceiling is one of my favorite looks. These "wow walls" of tile and texture go straight up to the ceiling and/or wrap around windows. Sure it’s an added expense and unnecessary for function, but what a statement it makes!

Goodbye, Winter.

Like any Native Texan, I welcome Winter and a break from our long, hot Summers... but this is getting ridiculous!  Are you as ready for some sunny flip flop weather as I am?  It's time to fold up the blankets, open the windows, and sip some chilled rose'!

Bye, bye, crib.

When we checked into the beach house last summer, my twins were crazy excited to sleep in their new bunk room.  Their room was the first to be "finished" as I wanted them, above all others, to feel comfortable, safe, warm & cozy.

And then, almost before I could say "sleep tight, little one," I was putting them into separate rooms at nap time more and more (i.e., too much giggling and not enough shut-eye).   Once summer was over, it was clear when the crib phase was history and it was time to create some "big kid" spaces in the city.

My dilemma on how to convert the co-ed nursery into a co-ed toddler room.  So, the nursery became Howie's Room and Bowen inherited the guest bedroom.

I love using Pinterest for inspiration on projects.  Here are some cool kid rooms to get you going...  If you hit a road-block or just don't have the time to pull a room together, ping me.

Lighting: Nautical, Industrial & Barn

The right lighting can make an average space sparkle - but you'll need to be adventurous and, unless you find a treasure at the bottom of a junk pile, be ready to spend some bucks.

Since I am a big fan of not paying retail (are you?), I am prepared to search and bargain for something special.  I found my island lights for the beach kitchen for only $100 each at Round Top.  For the over 12 ft. island - I needed something big.  With some spray paint, synthetic rope and left over wire, I added a substantial design element to the space.

If you you like this look, you're in luck!  Industrial and Vintage style lights are trending big, so you can find them almost anywhere.  Check our your local big box store, online, ebay and craigslist.  If your're in the Houston Area, wait for the Round Top Antiques Fair.  You won't be disappointed.  Check here for upcoming dates and lodging information.

Transition.

I have been working on ideas for re-branding, marketing, expanding.  Since fully embracing beach living, my hours in the city more over-booked.  I need to re-focus the business to include Galveston Area clients.  Construction is booming and I'm dying to dig back into a beachy project

The transition of Andern Design Company begins now!

Mid Century Modern

I'm working with some repeat clients who happen to also be easy-going, creative, and realistic.  They are remodeling a mid-century beauty in Houston (this is their third MCM reno!).  The kitchen is my focus on this project and I've got tons of inspiration that I want to inject.  I love when clients have a strong direction!

I'd love to add the black field stone tiles in the ground level of the beach house, but in a more traditional installation.  Something like this, perhaps?

Adios, Zombie Mommy.

I'm 40.5 years old and my twins turning three this week (Hooray!), I'm crossing the finish line of "new mommy syndrome".  I'm excited to refocus on myself, my design business, and my relationships (thanks to those that stuck with me through babies & construction).  I can proudly say (most days) I no longer look a zombie in yoga pants and can manage to have adult conversations without interruption at least twice a day!

As I think about what "focusing on myself" means, I realize I'm a very different person than I was three years ago.  I'm not as selfish.  I'm not as carefree.  I'm not the same size or shape. '

It's going to take some time to learn about this "new me" and I look forward to seeing how 2015 rounds out.
